I love Autumn.
I love the smells, the colours and the excuse to make a hot chocolate, wrap myself in a blanket and watch a good film.
However, with the nights drawing in and the temperature dropping, some people can really find it hard.
Also known as 'Winter Depression', Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects around 2 million people in the UK and can affect any age group from young children to the elderly. Due to reduced exposure to sunlight in Autumn and Winter, symptoms can range from low mood to a complete disinterest in normal everyday activities and feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness. If you suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder, these darker and colder months can be an immense challenge.
Now more than ever is the time to ensure that you look after yourself and avoid the feelings that SAD can bring. How can you help yourself?
I know when I am feeling low, a walk helps. Even if it's just a short walk in the fresh air. It boosts my mental wellbeing, increases my motivation and makes me feel more energetic.
Reflexology is proven to provide deep relaxation and increase your overall sense of wellbeing and balance. Certain reflex points on the hands, feet and face can encourage the release of natural 'feel-good hormones' and promote better sleep, which can also be affected during these long months.
'Your health is an investment. Not an expense'.
So, if you are having a down day, remember the positives of this time of year-brisk country walks in a warm scarf, steaming hot cups of tea, cosy fires and beautiful colours. AND don't forget to TALK :)
